Paneer price gap in UP raises question over its quality
LUCKNOW, Oct. 31 -- The availability of significantly cheaper varieties of paneer and khoya raises questions over the quality of products flooding Uttar Pradesh's markets.
With milk selling for around Rs.60 to Rs.70 a litre and five to six litres required to make a kilogram of good-quality paneer, the raw material alone costs between Rs.350 and Rs.420. Yet, paneer is currently sold for around Rs 350 to Rs 360 per kg in the open market and khoya is priced at around Rs 400 per kg.
According to an FSDA official, "Differences in procurement rates, milk quality, fat content, manufacturing efficiency and product composition can influence prices. However, when a product is sold substantially below the cost of its principal raw material, its ingredients and manufacturing process warrant closer scrutiny.
The larger concern is whether consumers are being told clearly when a product is made using non-dairy ingredients rather than milk."htc...
