Overnight baithak: Lucknow gets a classical music revival
India, May 22 -- Saturday night in the state capital will reverberate with classical musical notes during the first-of-its-kind overnight baithak event Vibhavari. Starting at 10pm and lasting till 6am, the overnight of classical music will bring alive the old tradition of baithaks.
The event will witness 13 performances by artistes from New Delhi, Chandigarh, Pune, and from all over the state. "Our endeavour is to revive such baithaks and help people to join in and enjoy music. Awadh has a tradition of overnight musical nights but it's no longer in practice," says organiser Abhishek Sharma.
Over the years, the city has witnessed classical music fests in baithak format like the Sanatkada Festival, Nadarpan Fest, KK Kapoor Memorial event, and more.
SNA awardee (2015) and sarod player Pandit Abhijeet Roy Chowdhury (68), who will be performing at the event, says, "My guruji and relative Pandit Bholanath Bhattacharya used to tell that such night baithaks used to happen at music patron Rai Umanath Bali's haveli. Late night concerts do happen but they used to stay till 1-2am. My timing is at midnight so I am looking forward to playing night raags."
"The Baithak tradition is reviving, and an overnight event is now happening in Lucknow," he notes. "In Benares, this type of event keeps happening, especially at the Sankat Mochan Mahotsav. Here, sangat (accompaniment) pairing is done beforehand, but there, the sangat happens randomly without rehearsal, which is great fun," he adds.
Tabla guru and performer, Pandit Ravi Ravi Mishra says, "People don't have time now, so this tradition faded away. I remember such baithak-type nights used to happen at weddings. There are many raags-late at night and early morning (Darbari, Sohini, Chandrakauns, Lalit, Bhatiyar, and more)-which can be best performed in real time."...
