Overloaded lift crashes at Jhansimedical college; one injured
KANPUR, May 1 -- A lift reportedly loaded beyond its approved capacity at Maharani Laxmibai Medical College in Jhansi crashed to the ground floor on Wednesday night, leaving one person injured and a woman unconscious.
Reports said the lift, which serves ward number 8 and is certified to carry eight passengers, had 16 people on board at the time of the incident, including children accompanying visitors. It had just reached the first floor when it gave way with a loud bang and plunged down, with power to the cabin cut immediately, trapping occupants in darkness. Security personnel, alerted by screams, rushed to the spot and forced the doors open with the help of bystanders. All those trapped were rescued.
Naushad, a resident of Pachkuiya who had come to visit a relative, Wahidan, sustained injuries and was admitted to the hospital. A woman fainted during the incident and was treated, while several others escaped with minor injuries.
"The lift's capacity is eight persons. At the time of the incident, 16 were on board. The incident appears to have occurred due to overloading," chief medical superintendent Dr Sachin Mathur said. The medical college administration ordered a preliminary inquiry. While initial findings pointed to overloading as the primary cause, officials said a technical inspection is underway....
