Over 100 arrested in illicit liquor crackdown
Rudrapur, March 6 -- Police have arrested 106 people and registered 115 cases in the first five days of a special campaign against the manufacture and smuggling of illicit liquor in Udham Singh Nagar district, officials said.
The drive, launched on February 28 on the instructions of senior superintendent of police (SSP) Ajay Ganpati, is part of a seven-day district-wide crackdown targeting liquor mafias operating in rural and forested pockets. According to Ganpati, police recovered 2,822 litres of illicit liquor during raids conducted across multiple police station jurisdictions.
Authorities also demolished 61 illegal distilleries and destroyed 1,47,645 litres of raw material, locally known as 'lahan', used in the manufacture of liquor.
Several vehicles allegedly used for transporting the contraband were also seized, he added. Police teams conducted continuous raids across the district to curb the illegal trade.
According to officials, seven cases were registered in Jaspur and seven accused were arrested. A total of 188 litres of illicit liquor was recovered, three illegal distilleries were demolished and 7,000 litres of raw material destroyed.
In Kunda, five cases were registered and five accused were arrested. Police seized 160 litres of illicit liquor and impounded a vehicle allegedly used for smuggling.
In Kashipur, 10 cases were registered and 10 people arrested. During the operation, police recovered 277 litres of illicit liquor, demolished two distilleries, destroyed 4,500 litres of raw material and seized a vehicle.
In the ITI police station area, six accused were arrested in six cases. Police recovered 117 litres of illicit liquor, demolished 10 illegal distilleries and destroyed 20,000 litres of raw material.
In Bajpur, 10 cases were registered and 10 accused arrested. Police seized 200 litres of illicit liquor, demolished nine distilleries and destroyed 30,000 litres of raw material. One vehicle was also seized.
In Kelakheda, three cases were registered and three accused arrested.
Police recovered 66 litres of illicit liquor, demolished two distilleries and destroyed 5,600 litres of raw material.
Meanwhile, in Nainital, seven accused were arrested in seven cases. Police recovered 215 litres of liquor, demolished nine distilleries and destroyed 14,500 litres of raw material.
"The campaign will continue and strict action will be taken against anyone involved in the manufacture and smuggling of illicit liquor," the SSP said....
