GORAKHPUR, Aug. 1 -- A police outpost in-charge was suspended and the Kotwali station house officer (SHO) was attached to police lines over alleged negligence in handling the disappearance of a minor girl who was later allegedly abducted, raped and murdered by a UP 112 constable, as outrage over the case continued to mount. The action was ordered by senior superintendent of police (SSP) Kaustubh after a preliminary departmental inquiry found prima facie evidence of negligence and dereliction of duty in responding to the complaint. The SHO was identified as Chattar Pal Singh and the police outpost in-charge as Deepshikha. "Negligence in public service and failure to discharge official responsibilities will not be tolerated," Kaustubh said. Meanwhile, lawyers, political leaders and human rights activists accused the police of giving preferential treatment to the accused constable. Tension prevailed outside the residence of the district judge after police attempted to produce the accused, who was arrested on Thursday, before the court to seek his remand. Members of the legal fraternity staged a protest and engaged in a heated exchange with police personnel. Political leaders also visited the victim's family to express their condolences. District Congress Committee president Rajesh Tiwari and former district president Nirmala Paswan assured the bereaved family of their support. Speaking to reporters, Paswan criticised BJP MP Ravi Kishan for remaining silent over the increasing incidents of crimes against girls. Meanwhile, the post-mortem examination reportedly revealed multiple grievous injuries on the victim's body. According to police sources, she had sustained eight fractures in her limbs and hands, besides severe abdominal injuries. Further investigation into the case is underway. htc...
