PRAYAGRAJ, Oct. 31 -- The state government has once again initiated the process to set up a camp office of the directorate of higher education in Lucknow, sparking strong opposition from employees based in Prayagraj. In a directive issued on Thursday, special secretary Girijesh Kumar Tyagi instructed Amit Bhardwaj, director, higher education, to establish the camp office in Lucknow "to enhance administrative efficiency" following departmental review and discussions at the government level. The new office will operate from the recently constructed Government College in Latif Nagar, Sarojini Nagar (Lucknow) until further orders. Bhardwaj confirmed receipt of the order. According to the government order, a copy of which is with HT, the move is intended to ensure quicker and more effective disposal of official work. However, the decision has met with immediate resistance from employees of the directorate in Prayagraj. The Directorate of Education Ministerial Officials Association convened an emergency executive meeting on Thursday and subsequently wrote to the chief minister, demanding that the special secretary's order be withdrawn. Employees argued that the directorate of higher education has been based in Prayagraj since before independence and functions from historically significant buildings. They also pointed out that an e-content studio worth around Rs.1 crore was established in Prayagraj in 2023-24 to facilitate online governance through video conferencing with senior officials in Lucknow. Surendra Kumar Singh, secretary of Directorate of Education Ministerial Officials Association informed that they warned that setting up a parallel office in Lucknow would "undermine the dignity of Prayagraj, the city of learning."...
