LUCKNOW, April 22 -- Councillors of the opposition parties on Tuesday strongly criticised mayor Sushma Kharkwal's decision to convene a special house meeting of the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) on Thursday, alleging the move was 'politically motivated' and aimed at targeting the Samajwadi Party and the Congress. The controversy began amid speculations that the special session was called in the backdrop of the recent defeat of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha with a proposed condemnation motion against SP and Congress councillors. However, opposition members allege that the official notice issued by the civic body did not clearly mention the agenda, raising serious questions about transparency. Congress councillor Mamta Chaudhary, along with SP deputy leader Devendra Singh Yadav, Kamran Beg, Mamta Rawat and others expressed strong objection to the move.
