Dehradun, July 23 -- A day after major Opposition leaders were detained after staging a protest on the NEET paper leak in front of the Prime Minister's residence in New Delhi, Dehradun witnessed fierce demonstrations by the state units of the BJP and the Congress. BJP leaders accused senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of showing anti-democratic conduct and attempting to spur unrest among the youth. While the BJP had initially planned a march to the state Congress headquarters on Rajpur Road, protesting workers were stopped by police barricades near Parade Ground. Meanwhile, the Dehradun Mahanagar Congress Committee organised a protest at Ashley Hall Chowk, where party workers demanded Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation and raised slogans against alleged mistreatment of Opposition leaders at Tuesday's protest. State BJP president Mahendra Bhatt questioned the need for Tuesday's protest. "Parliament is in session and he (Rahul Gandhi) has every opportunity to raise issues in the House. Union ministers even met him and accepted his conditions, yet he is trying to mislead the country," he said. State Congress chief Ganesh Godiyal termed the BJP's call to lay siege to the state Congress headquarters "contrary to democratic values" and "entirely unfortunate." "Instead of standing with students on the issues that matter, the BJP is attempting to suppress the opposition's voice in order to divert attention from those very issues," he said. "We appeal to all Congress workers to maintain peace, restraint and discipline, and not to succumb to any provocation. At the same time, we expect the administration to ensure the security of the state Congress headquarters and prevent any untoward situation," he said. Addressing party workers, Dehradun Mahanagar Congress Committee chief Dr Jasvinder Singh Gogi alleged that Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, and youth activists were subjected to detention and police brutality during the ongoing protests in New Delhi. "When the country's youth seek to peacefully raise concerns over education, employment and their future, the Central government responds with repression instead of democratic dialogue. This is not only against the spirit of the Constitution but also an assault on the very soul of democracy," he said....
