Oppn protests against CEC continue for 3rd straight day
New Delhi, Oct. 9 -- The Opposition's demonstrations for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's removal dragged into a third consecutive day with a visit to Rajghat on Thursday to hold a dharna after two days of fiery protests in central Delhi, triggering an unprecedented showdown between the Opposition and the poll body chief.
The MPs boarded buses under heavy security cover of the Delhi Police from the outer circle of Connaught Place at 3.30 PM. A massive crowd of Congress activists drawn from its Delhi unit, youth and students' wing moved along with the buses, cheering Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi-the prominent faces of this round of protests-in jam-packed roads turning into movable seas of humans.
On Wednesday, the MPs had gathered for a vegetarian lunch at Sagar Ratna, Janpath. On Thursday, they shifted to the busy outer circle to lunch at Moets, an old Delhi brand. Like Wednesday, three air-conditioned buses were hired in advance. Packaged water and snacks were stored in them. The distance between Moets restaurant and Rajghat is barely 3.5 kms. The procession took 1.10 hours to reach the Gandhi Smarak.
"All the MPs of the INDIA alliance are going to the Gandhi Memorial. We will stage a sit-in there and peacefully pray that Modi and Shah are blessed with wisdom. We want to tell the country that the BJP government is snatching away our right to vote. Modi and Shah are snatching away that freedom which great leaders like Gandhiji, Nehru ji, and Sardar Patel ji had won for us," Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said before the lawmakers hit the road.
"Around 300 MPs want to hold a peaceful sit-in, but on the first day, we were stopped near the Election Commission's office. Then on the second day, we were prevented from going to Jantar Mantar, and our people were beaten. The truth is that Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Mohan Bhagwat, and Gyanesh Kumar have hijacked the country through a criminal conspiracy. They have destroyed the Constitution and stolen votes. They (Amit Shah, Narendra Modi, Mohan Bhagwat and Gyanesh Kumar) will be brought to justice. This is our guarantee, and you will see it happen," Rahul Gandhi said in Connaught Place.
The Samajwadi Party MPs returned to participate in the protests on Thursday, providing a fillip to Opposition unity. The Party was absent on Wednesday's march to Jantar Mantar, raising doubts about how long the Opposition unity would hold. The protests also spilled over in the states. While SP took out a march in the Basti district of UP to demand Kumar's removal, in Patna, RJD chief Tejaswi Yadav, CPI(ML) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya and VIP chief Mukesh Sahani launched protests with MPs and INDIA bloc leaders to demand Gyanesh Kumar's ouster. In Jammu, the Congress' district committee marched to protest against FIRs filed on Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra....
