Online IPL betting racket busted in Doon; 5 arrested
Dehradun, May 9 -- A joint team of Dehradun Police and the Uttarakhand Special Task Force busted an alleged international online betting racket linked to a betting app and arrested five people from a rented flat in the Vasant Vihar in Dehradun, officials said on Friday.
Police said the accused were allegedly facilitating online betting on Indian Premier League (IPL) matches through the Readybook betting app and WhatsApp groups.
Senior superintendent of police Pramendra Dobhal said the raid was conducted on the night of May 7 following inputs about online betting activities.
"During the operation, we arrested five accused who were accepting bets through online platforms," he said.
Police identified the accused as Sunil Sharma, Sandeep Gupta, Akarand Sharma and Abhishek Sharma, all residents of Surguja in Chhattisgarh, and Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Aurangabad in Bihar.
Police seized three laptops, 17 mobile phones, 22 ATM cards and an Airtel Xstream Fiber connection.
A case under sections 3 and 4 of the Public Gambling Act was registered, said police....
