India, Sept. 26 -- The controversy over the reappointment of N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons and Tata Group, has drawn national attention to the conglomerate's governance structure and the family that created this Indian business behemoth. Against this backdrop, read former journalist Girish Kuber's The Tatas: How a Family Built a Business and a Nation (translated into English from Marathi by Vikrant Pandey in 2019). Packed with anecdotes, the book arranges much of what was known about the Tatas in the public domain and some of what wasn't in a neat chronology. Kuber starts with Nusserwanji Tata's move from Navsari, Gujarat, to Bombay, after giving up his family profession of priesthood. Then appears his son, Jamsetji, who sowed the seeds of the conglomerate as we know it today. And finally, it's Ratan Naval Tata juggling twin forays into IT and passenger cars. The book perhaps looks too fondly at the Tatas, but the information it packs more than compensates for the slant....
