Now, modified silencer dealers under scanner too
LUCKNOW, June 21 -- In a shift from routine traffic enforcement, the authorities in Lucknow have widened their crackdown on illegal modified silencers, putting businesses selling and promoting such modifications are now firmly under the scanner as well.
The move makes it clear that action will no longer stop at vehicle owners.
During a special joint enforcement drive conducted by the Traffic Police and the Assistant Regional Transport Office (ARTO) on Friday, several vehicles fitted with modified silencers were seized for violating motor vehicle norms and contributing to noise pollution.
What set the operation apart was action against the source of the problem. Officials imposed a Rs.1 lakh penalty on a shop allegedly involved in the sale of illegal modified silencers, signalling a tougher approach aimed at dismantling the network that enables the widespread use of noisy exhaust systems. The team also seized various types of silencers from the shop.
"The campaign was carried out under the supervision of senior traffic and transport officials amid growing concerns over the increasing number of motorcycles using altered exhausts that generate excessive noise on city roads. Such modifications are prohibited under motor vehicle regulations and are often blamed for disturbing residents and creating public nuisance," said the traffic department in a statement.
Officials said the focus is now on both demand and supply. While riders found using illegal modifications will continue to face seizure and penal action, workshops and dealers facilitating such alterations can also expect enforcement measures.
"The move sends a strong message that the administration is looking beyond individual violators and targeting the ecosystem that keeps the illegal modified-silencer trade alive," said DCP traffic Raveena Tyagi.
Authorities have indicated that similar drives will continue across the city, with strict action against both users and sellers found flouting the rules....
