Dehradun, June 24 -- The state Congress unit on Tuesday said that no compromise with "the interest of locals" would be accepted regarding the probe into the recent clash between locals and a group of Sikh pilgrims in Karnaprayag, as they questioned the transfer of the probe out of Chamoli district a day earlier. Two FIRs were lodged over the June 16 incident, one based on a local's complaint and the other based on a complaint by the father of one of the pilgrims, who were returning from Hemkund Sahib. Both FIRs were transferred to Haridwar district on Monday. "The transfer of the FIR registered on the complaint of one of four pilgrims' father in the Karnaprayag incident to Haridwar at their request may be understandable. However, the transfer of the primary case [registered earlier against pilgrims] is incomprehensible," said state Congress chief Ganesh Godiyal on Tuesday. "Did locals and hotel operators seek the case's transfer to Haridwar? If not, whose interests is the government seeking to serve through this decision? Ignoring the rights of local residents and distancing them from the process of justice is unacceptable," he said, seeking clarity from the state government on the matter. "All political parties and local public representatives should come together to safeguard the rights of the victims," he said. Meanwhile, the police headquarters has ordered an inquiry into allegations made by various Sikh organisations regarding the alleged conduct of local police towards Sikh pilgrims. Garhwal Range IG Rajiv Swaroop said Uttarakhand Police respects the religious sentiments of all communities. "The Hemkund Sahib Yatra is a sacred pilgrimage associated with the faith of thousands of devotees. It is being conducted safely, peacefully and in an organised manner through coordinated efforts of the police and administration." BJP state media in charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said, "The Congress should refrain from politicising such sensitive issues. Those seeking to disrupt communal harmony and peace in the state will not be allowed to succeed."...
