Nigam, Aaquib script stunning UP comeback win
LUCKNOW, Oct. 31 -- Leg-spinner Vipraj Nigam and left-arm pacer Aaquib Khan produced devastating spells on the final morning as Uttar Pradesh completed a remarkable 26-run victory over hosts Hyderabad in their Under-23 Col CK Nayudu Trophy Elite Group B match, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Friday.
Hyderabad, needing 120 more runs with eight wickets in hand overnight, collapsed from 74/2 to 167 all out in 57.3 overs, handing UP an improbable win after they had been firmly on the back foot for much of the contest. Uttar Pradesh, who stand at the second position with 30 points in three matches so far, now take on hosts and table topper Railways at the Railways Cricket Ground in Rajkot from November 3.
Chasing 194, Hyderabad had appeared in complete control at stumps on day three on Thursday, with captain Aman Rao unbeaten on 30. But Nigam, who had already taken six wickets in Hyderabad's first innings, ripped through the middle and lower order with 5/72 from 16 overs, while Aaquib Khan's searing 4/48 from 23.3 overs choked the run chase. Aman Rao top-scored with 68, but once he fell at 159/9, the resistance ended swiftly, with Nishanth S last out for 12.
Uttar Pradesh, having won the toss and opted to bat, were bundled out for just 168 in their first innings. Sameer Rizvi's 40 was the lone substantial contribution as off-spinner Nishanth S claimed a superb 5/30, with Pranav Varma chipping in with 3/36. Hyderabad seized the initiative and piled up 278 in 84.4 overs, taking a crucial 110-run first-innings lead.
Pranav Varma led the hosts' batting with a fluent 79, while Wafi Kachchhi made 53. Useful knocks from Aravelly Avanish Rao (33) and Pattapu Raghava (31) kept the scoreboard ticking. Vipraj Nigam was UP's standout bowler, returning figures of 6/104, with Prashant Veer picking up 3/99.
Trailing by 110, Uttar Pradesh needed a big response, and their batters delivered. Kavya Teotia anchored the innings with a patient 53, while Sameer Rizvi (47), Kaartikaya Singh (44), Swastik Chikara (40) and Prashant Veer (19) all contributed. The real surprise package was Vipraj Nigam, whose counter-attacking 56 off 51 balls, laced with eight fours and two sixes, propelled UP to 303 in 93.4 overs and set Hyderabad a target of 194.
Pranav Varma was Hyderabad's most successful bowler with 5/105, while Nishanth S added 4/59. At 213/7, UP were still in trouble, but a crucial 63-run stand for the eighth wicket between Kaartikaya Singh and Nigam shifted the momentum decisively.
On Friday, Hyderabad at 74/2, looked poised to close out the game. But Nigam and Aaquib Khan had other plans. The duo combined to take nine wickets in the innings, with Nigam removing Aman Rao, Khush Agarwal, Tarun Rajan and Nishanth S in quick succession, while Aaquib Khan cleaned up the top and middle order.
"From the very start of the day, our concept was quite clear about a comeback as it was a fourth day pitch and we knew exactly what was going to happen. I kept hitting the right areas on the pitch and let the red cherry do the rest," said Vipraj Nigam after the match.
