NHRC seeks report on boy's sexual assault in mosque
Dehradun, Aug. 29 -- The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report that a cleric allegedly sexually abused a seven-year-old boy at a mosque in the Jhabreda area of Haridwar district on August 20. It and issued notices to the Haridwar district authorities seeking a detailed report on the matter.
According to the statement issued by the government, the commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of the human rights of the victim. "Therefore, it has issued notices to the District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police, Haridwar, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks," it said.
According to police, the accused Nasir (42), resident of Laksar, allegedly sodomised the minor who used to visit the mosque to learn Islamic verses from the mosque imam.
Jhabreda police station sub-inspector Nitin Bisht said, "Mosque imam Nasir was arrested from Khatakhedi Devpur road on August 21 while he was trying to escape. The accused had forcibly taken the boy to his room, where he committed the sexual offence. A case has been lodged under BNS section 351(2) (criminal intimidation) and relevant sections of Pocso Act."...
