PRAYAGRAJ, June 8 -- Tension prevailed at Hind Nursing Home in the Paltan Bazar area of Pratapgarh after a newborn allegedly died during treatment following delivery, triggering allegations of medical negligence and assault on the victim's family members. Acting on the complaint, health authorities sealed the operation theatre (OT) and outpatient department (OPD) of the nursing home and barred it from admitting or operating on new patients pending completion of an inquiry. According to Neeraj Gupta, a resident of Garwara under the Antu police station area in Pratapgarh, his 22-year-old wife Mamta Gupta went into labour late on Saturday evening. Around 8 pm, he took her to Hind Nursing Home on a motorcycle, where she was admitted after he deposited Rs 3,000. Neeraj alleged that about an hour later, the nursing home staff demanded another Rs 9,000. A baby girl was subsequently delivered normally, without surgery. He further claimed that around 5.30 am, the staff informed the family that the newborn's condition was critical and demanded another Rs 10,000 for treatment. Family members repeatedly requested to see the baby, but the staff allegedly avoided doing so. According to the complaint, when Neeraj returned after arranging the money, he was informed that the newborn had died because treatment could not be administered in time due to the delay in payment. Alleging negligence, the family contacted the police through UP-112. However, family members alleged that soon after the police team arrived, three to four unidentified men present at the nursing home assaulted several relatives, including Neeraj's aunt Sharda Gupta and another relative, Vipin, in front of police personnel. The commotion drew local residents to the spot, following which the alleged attackers fled while issuing threats to the family, Neeraj claimed. He further alleged that the attackers had contacted the nursing home proprietor, Dr Shahida Siddiqui, over the phone and were instructed to assault the family members and confine them to a room. Police have sent the newborn's body for post-mortem examination and initiated the process of registering a case. Meanwhile, deputy chief medical officer Dr Rajesh Kumar reached the nursing home and ordered the sealing of its OT and OPD sections....
