LUCKNOW, July 28 -- Former champions Uttar Pradesh begin their title chase in Coimbatore with a refreshed look and renewed purpose as the 16th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship gets underway on Tuesday. The side - which fell agonisingly short in recent seasons, losing to hosts Punjab in successive penalty shootouts - will be led by energetic captain Rahul Rajbhar and guided by coach Upendra Chauhan as it seeks a return to the podium. Memories of those narrow defeats still linger. In September 2024, Uttar Pradesh were beaten 3-4 on penalties by Punjab in the Hockey India Junior Men National Championship, and a year later the teams once again went to a shootout, with Punjab prevailing in a hard-line match that left UP finishing fourth. Those setbacks, however, have prompted a reset rather than resignation. The state association has assembled an 18-member squad that blends defensive discipline, creative midfielders and a forward line that has been prolific across state and inter-district competitions. The selected players are: Mithilesh Yadav, Satyam Pandey, Ritesh Pandey, Vishal Pandey, Shashi Shekhar Rai, Ajit Pal, Ujjwal Pal, Lalit Patel (goalkeeper), Shivam Patel, Abhijit Pal, Abhishek Khatik, Anurag Chauhan (goalkeeper), Irfan Hussain, Ashish Yadav, Neeraj Prajapati, Triloki and Gaurav Yadav. UP Hockey secretary, Rajnish Mishra expressed confidence in the group while announcing the squad, emphasising the state's development pathway. "We have built a robust pathway over the years - from sub-junior to junior and beyond - and that continuity shows in performances," Mishra said. "Under Rahul Rajbhar's leadership and with Upendra Chauhan's guidance, I expect this team to carry forward Uttar Pradesh's legacy in the domestic circuit and make a strong statement in Coimbatore." That legacy is built on structured coaching programmes, comprehensive talent identification at district level and sustained investment in grassroots academies. The results are visible: Uttar Pradesh has produced consistent contenders across sub-junior, junior and senior categories, and their depth has become a competitive advantage. Several players in this year's squad have already turned heads in state leagues and zonal championships, bringing a mix of match experience and hunger for national recognition. Captain Rahul Rajbhar has been central to UP's domestic momentum. Praised for his tactical acumen and calming presence in pressure situations, Rajbhar will be expected to marshal a side that aims to be solid at the back and incisive going forward.
