Lucknow, Aug. 10 -- Nearly 2,700 vehicles were challaned and around 610 were impounded during a four-day enforcement drive conducted by the Uttar Pradesh transport department across five divisions, officials said. The campaign, named Mission Aarohi, was carried out from August 5 to 8 on the directions of transport minister Dayashankar Singh. It focused on violations involving passenger and commercial vehicles. Enforcement teams operated in the Kanpur, Agra, Jhansi, Banda and Prayagraj divisions. According to transport department officials, 2,585 vehicles were challaned during the first three days of the drive. The final day's enforcement continued until late Saturday night, taking the total number of challans to nearly 2,700. The department said the drive is expected to generate revenue and penalties worth several crore. Enforcement teams mainly targeted unauthorised passenger buses, goods vehicles without number plates or with tampered number plates, overloaded vehicles, vehicles with outstanding road tax and private vehicles being used for commercial purposes. Officials also inspected long-distance sleeper buses to check whether they complied with prescribed passenger safety standards. Buses found violating the norms were challaned and, in cases of serious violations, were impounded. D Singh Gaur, additional transport commissioner (enforcement) and nodal officer for mission Aarohi, said the campaign was aimed at improving compliance with transport rules and ensuring passenger safety.
