Mussoorie/Pithoragarh, Sept. 5 -- Natural disasters triggered by incessant rains and landslides have claimed at least 79 lives and left 95 people missing across Uttarakhand since April 1, according to the latest district-wise report of the state disaster management department. Uttarkashi reported the highest fatalities with 16 deaths, followed by Chamoli (11), Dehradun (7), Rudraprayag (7) and Pithoragarh (6). Other districts that recorded casualties include Pauri (9), Udham Singh Nagar (8), Bageshwar (3), Champawat (3), Almora (1), Haridwar (1), Nainital (2) and Tehri (5). Of the 95 missing, Uttarkashi accounted for 76, making it the worst-affected district. Pauri reported seven missing, Rudraprayag nine, while Chamoli and Bageshwar reported one and two missing, respectively. The disasters have also caused widespread damage to property and livestock. At least 229 houses were completely destroyed, 71 severely damaged and 1,828 partially damaged. Livestock losses include 88 large animals and 1,481 small ones, of which 1,242 were poultry. Meanwhile, fresh landslides were reported in Sagwara village near Tharali in Chamoli district late Wednesday night. Heavy debris flow swept away one house completely, severely damaged three others and left three houses partially damaged. Six affected families were shifted to relief camps, officials said. "Four houses have been damaged. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported. The affected families have been shifted to safer places and provided ration kits and tarpaulin sheets," said Pankaj Bhatt, SDM Tharali. District disaster management officer NK Joshi said the area has turned landslide-prone, prompting authorities to keep close watch. Meanwhile, a state government helicopter airlifted more than a dozen ailing villagers stranded in remote areas of Pithoragarh district after landslides cut off road access. "Villagers were airlifted from Tejam, Dhar Pangu, Khela, Suwa, Bung Bung, Jamku, Dhami Gaon, Kanar and Makan Kailash villages and admitted to hospitals in Dharchula and Pithoragarh," said Bhupendra Mahar, district disaster management officer. The state disaster management department said 266 roads remained blocked by landslides and boulder falls till Thursday. The state recorded 8.1mm rainfall in last 24 hours.
