Mystery continues to shroud Mathura family deaths
Agra, Feb. 12 -- Mystery continues to surround the deaths of five family members found inside their house in Khapparpur village of Mathura district on Tuesday morning. Police suspect the case to be one of collective suicide, though the exact reason remains unclear.
The deceased were a 35-year-old farmer, his wife aged about 32, their two daughters aged eight and five, and their three-year-old son. All were found dead inside a room of their home.
According to the post-mortem report, the three children were strangled while they were asleep between 3 am and 4 am. Police said the mother appears to have objected. She was also strangled and then struck on the head. She died before the children did. Officials said the father later ended his life by holding a live electric wire. He is believed to have died about an hour after his wife and children.
A video was recovered from the man's mobile phone. In the video, recorded around 4.30 am, he claimed that the family had decided to end their lives because of their own sorrow. However, the post-mortem findings suggest that his wife was not in agreement and had resisted the killing of the children.
Police also recovered a diary said to contain a suicide note. A message was found written on a wall of the house. In the note and the video, the man reportedly stated that no one should be held responsible for their deaths.
Additional director general (Agra Zone) Anupam Kulshrestha visited the village. "Prima facie, it appears to be a case of collective suicide based on the message written on the wall, the handwritten note and the video recovered from the mobile phone," he said.
The family owned agricultural land. The woman was the only daughter of her father and was due to inherit land in Sadabad town of Hathras district. Police said a plot had recently been sold for Rs.15 lakh and part of the payment was still pending. Police are examining all aspects of the case.
They also questioned a priest at a local temple where the man reportedly spent much of his time after giving up alcohol and other habits. The last rites of all five were conducted on Tuesday night. With them, the reason behind the tragic incident remains unanswered....
