Haridwar, July 10 -- A man wanted in connection with the murder of a woman was arrested following an exchange of fire with police on the Haridwar-Dehradun border early on Thursday, police said. The accused, identified as Jeeshan (26), a resident of Bijnor district in Uttar Pradesh, is alleged to have strangled a 40-year-old woman to death on June 28 over a payment dispute. City police station Station House Officer (SHO) Kundan Singh Rana said, "Jeeshan was riding a motorcycle with an accomplice when a police team intercepted them near the Dudhiyabandh tri-junction. The accused opened fire on the police, prompting retaliatory firing in which he sustained a bullet injury to his left leg. He was arrested, while his accomplice managed to flee." Police recovered a country-made pistol and two live cartridges from Jeeshan. He has been admitted to a hospital, and efforts are under way to trace the absconding accomplice.
