Mumbai-NMIA flight shift pushed to 2027
New Delhi, Oct. 14 -- The proposed partial shifting of international flights from Mumbai airport to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has been deferred until the summer schedule beginning March 2027, following discussions between airport operator Adani Airports Holdings Ltd (AAHL) and airline representatives on Tuesday, an official aware of the development said.
AAHL, which owns both airports, had asked airlines to shift 33% of their international flights from Mumbai airport to NMIA by October 25, the start of the winter schedule. Mumbai airport had planned to cut 265 weekly international flights from Terminal 2 (T2) from that date, HT reported last week. The move was linked to the planned redevelopment of Mumbai airport's Terminal 1 (T1), with the airport operator seeking to redistribute traffic between the two airports. Airlines opposed the proposed transition since the Navi Mumbai is around 35km away from the Mumbai airport and shifting of operations of 33% of international flights require adequate time for planning before execution.
According to a statement issued by Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), AAHL's top leadership, including director Jeet Adani, and CEO Arun Bansal, assured the airline community at the meeting that disruptions would be minimised and historical slot allocations respected, with no changes to slots during the winter schedule. MIAL said full support would be extended to any airline wanting to shift operations to NMIA.
"With the redevelopment plan shifted to March, airlines are expected to transition their international operations in a phased manner," the official said. "Airlines have also asked AAHL to share its full plan for the redevelopment of T1," he added.
The civil aviation secretary will review the transition plan at a meeting on October 20. AAHL and airline representatives will meet again on October 28 to address any pending issues....
