MSC to buy 49% in Adani Vizhinjam port for $1.4 bn
Ahmedabad, July 1 -- Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) on Tuesday said Terminal Investment Limited (TiL), the container terminal arm of Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) Group, will acquire a 49% stake in Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Limited (AVPPL) in a transaction valuing the Kerala transshipment port at $ 2.85 billion.
TiL will invest $1.397 billion for the 49% stake, while APSEZ will retain majority ownership of the port, the company said in a statement. The transaction is subject to regulatory and other customary approvals, it said.
TiL operates more than 100 container terminals across five continents and handles over 70 million TEUs annually as part of the MSC Group.
APSEZ said the deal marks the third partnership between the Adani Group and MSC after their joint ventures at Mundra Container Terminal No. 3 and Ennore. It also described the investment as the largest foreign private investment in Indian port infrastructure. Its shares rose 1.91% on Tuesday.
The company said the partnership is expected to provide greater cargo volume visibility, accelerate the ramp-up of the Vizhinjam port, increase Bangladesh cargo currently routed through competing Southeast Asian hubs, strengthen connectivity with East Africa and raise relay cargo volumes.
"Vizhinjam port has emerged as a premier transshipment hub and ramped up at an unprecedented pace, becoming the first Indian port to earn the unique distinction of crossing 2 million TEUs within 18 months of operations," APSEZ Whole-time Director and Chief Executive Officer Ashwani Gupta said.
Commissioned in December 2024, Vizhinjam is India's first deep-draft mega transshipment port. It currently has a capacity of 1.6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), which is being expanded to 5.7 million TEUs by December 2028.
The port handled 1.3 million TEUs and 615 vessels in its first year of operations. Within 18 months, it crossed 2 million TEUs and handled more than 950 vessels.
In June 2026, it received its 1,000th vessel. The company said the port has handled more than 70 ultra large container vessels, the highest among Indian ports....
