Bahraich, May 22 -- A mother's desperate attempt to save her six-year-old son from a leopard attack in Bahraich's Katarniaghat region on Thursday left three people injured and an entire village shaken. The incident took place in Teliyanpurwa village under the Barkhadiya Beat of Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary when a leopard reportedly emerged from a nearby sugarcane field and attacked the child sitting beside a roadside. According to villagers, Meena Devi, 32, wife of Heera Lal, was with her son Mohit when the leopard suddenly pounced on the boy and tried to drag him towards the field. Meena immediately grabbed her son and struggled to pull him back as the animal clawed at her. Villagers said the woman continued holding on to the child despite suffering injuries to her hands, legs and head. Hearing her cries, residents rushed to the spot with sticks and shouted to scare away the leopard. "The leopard had caught the child, but the mother did not let go of him," said villager Umesh, who was also injured during the incident. As more people gathered, the leopard retreated towards the sugarcane fields. Mohit escaped with minor injuries. However, while fleeing, the animal attacked Umesh, 26, injuring him on the head and neck. All three injured persons were first taken to the Primary Health Centre in Sujauli and later referred to the Community Health Centre in Mihirpurwa for further treatment. Forest officials reached the village soon after the incident and began surveillance in the area. Authorities suspect the leopard may still be hiding in nearby fields. Divisional forest officer Apoorv Dixit said medical assistance and compensation are being provided to the injured. He added that permission has been sought to install a cage in the area to trap the leopard....
