Mother, newborn die at clinic; alleged settlement sparks outrage
PRAYAGRAJ, May 31 -- A 23-year-old woman, Yasmin Bano, and her newborn baby died under suspicious circumstances at a private clinic in the Saifabad market of Pratapgarh on Friday night. The incident has triggered local outrage, especially after allegations emerged that the matter was settled privately and no legal action was pursued.
The family, residents of Saifabad, alleged the clinic charged them Rs.37,000 for the delivery. After childbirth on Friday, the condition of both the mother and the newborn deteriorated.
It is claimed that the clinic proprietor later transported them to the Patti Community Health Centre in his own vehicle, where doctors declared them brought dead. Family members alleged both victims had already died at the clinic before being shifted to the CHC.
Tensions escalated when relatives attempted to lodge a complaint, accusing the local police outpost in-charge of pressuring them to reach a settlement instead of registering a case. An alleged compromise was reached later that night, with the clinic owner reportedly paying Rs.50,000 to the grieving family.
On Saturday, local residents gathered to protest against illegal or unsafe clinic. By the time police reached the victim's residence, the bodies of both the mother and child had already been buried.
