Mother, 3-year-old daughter run over by train in Prayagraj
PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 17 -- A 40-year-old woman and her three-year-old daughter were killed after being struck by a train while crossing railway tracks in Prayagraj's trans-Yamuna area on Saturday evening.
The victims were identified as Kabootra Devi, wife of auto-rickshaw driver Ramashankar Nishad, and her daughter, Devika. They were residents of the Nishad settlement in Umapur Kala village, under the jurisdiction of the Manda police station's Bharatganj outpost.
According to police and villagers, Kabootra was carrying Devika to a private hospital in Tikri village, approximately 2km from their home, at around 5 pm. Residents often cross the Delhi-Howrah railway line to reach the Prayagraj-Mirzapur highway, as there is no railway underpass or bridge connecting the village to the main road.
As the mother and daughter were crossing the tracks, a speeding train on the down line struck them, killing both instantly.
Manda SHO Kuldeep Sharma, along with Bharatganj outpost in-charge Harsh Kumar, Dighiya outpost in-charge Akshay Pratap and other personnel, arrived at the scene and sent the bodies for postmortem examinations.
The incident has left the village in mourning. Kabootra and Ramashankar are survived by two other children: five-year-old Satyam Chaudhary and six-month-old Anand Chaudhary. Devika was a student at the village anganwadi centre.
Villagers noted that they frequently risk their lives crossing the tracks due to the lack of an underpass. They claimed that residents had even boycotted the Lok Sabha election to demand the construction of an underpass, but the issue remains unresolved....
