Mosque portions removed as part of Dalmandi road widening
VARANASI, July 3 -- Portions of five mosques falling within the alignment of the Dalmandi road widening project were demolished with the consent of the mutwallis (caretakers) and mosque management committees, officials said.
Officials said the caretakers and committee members cooperated with the exercise and assisted workers during the demolition. The Public Works Department (PWD) had completed the acquisition process, registered the affected portions and disbursed compensation before the administration initiated the action.
A police presence, backed by PAC and paramilitary personnel, was deployed to maintain law and order, while drone surveillance monitored the operation. PWD executive engineer K.K. Singh and other officials were present during the operation....
