Dehradun, Aug. 1 -- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Devprayag Vinod Kandari on Friday wrote to chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami seeking a high-level probe into the claims of dowry harassment around the alleged suicide of a government school teacher, who was found dead at her in-laws' home in Dehradun's Doiwala on Wednesday. "She was a resident of my Assembly constituency and worked as a teacher. She died under mysterious circumstances on July 29. I request you to order a high-level investigation into her death and ensure strict punishment for those found guilty," he wrote. Meanwhile, Uttarakhand State Commission for Women chairperson Kusum Kandwal also took cognisance of the case and directed Dehradun senior superintendent of police (SSP) Pramendra Dobhal and Doiwala circle officer Vandana Verma to ensure a fair and thorough investigation. She also spoke to the victim's family and said the commission would closely monitor the investigation and seek periodic progress reports. A video message from the woman purportedly addressed to her mother contains allegations of repeated abuse and ill-treatment by her in-laws. In the FIR registered on Wednesday over her death, her mother accused her husband, mother-in-law and sister of repeatedly taunting her daughter and also physically assaulted her. "They harassed her mentally and physically, sometimes over dowry and sometimes by calling her manhoos (inauspicious). My daughter used to share these incidents with me," she alleged. Police said the couple was married in November last year. Doiwala SHO Vinod Kumar Gusain said that the case was an apparent suicide. "The postmortem examination was conducted on Thursday," he said. The victim's cousin told reporter that their family's statements were recorded on Friday. CO Vandana Verma said a forensic science laboratory (FSL) has inspected the spot where the body was found. "The woman's mother has alleged that her daughter was subjected to harassment by her husband and in-laws. These allegations are being verified... The post-mortem report is awaited," she said. State Congress vice president Suryakant Dhasmana alleged that the case marked a new example of rising violence against women in the state. BJP's Manveer Singh Chauhan, however, accused the Congress of politicising the issue.
