LUCKNOW, July 24 -- A 22-year-old man who had been reported missing in June was allegedly murdered, with Lucknow police recovering his skeletal remains after arresting a second accused in the case from Barabanki on Thursday, officials said. According to police, the accused, Mohammad Sahil, 22, was arrested from Hussainmau village in Barabanki's Deva area. His arrest led to the recovery of the skeletal remains of the victim, Gulfam Ahmad, and the T-shirt he was allegedly wearing at the time of the murder. Gulfam had gone missing on June 2, following which a missing person report was lodged at Chinhat police station. As weeks passed without any trace of him, his brother, Ishtiyaq Ahmad, approached the police again on July 19, alleging that Gulfam had been abducted. The case was subsequently converted into a criminal investigation. Police had earlier arrested one of the accused, Sameer, on July 20. During the investigation, electronic evidence and technical surveillance led investigators to Sahil. Deputy commissioner of police (East) Deeksha Sharma said that during interrogation, Sahil disclosed that Gulfam was travelling with him, his brother Adil, Sameer and another associate, Toufeeq, in a car when an argument broke out. "According to the accused, the group assaulted Gulfam, took him to the bank of a canal near Naimau village in Barabanki's Mati area, slit his throat and concealed the body in nearby bushes," the officer said. Acting on Sahil's disclosure, police recovered the skeletal remains and sent them for forensic examination and further legal formalities. Police said the victim's abandoned car had already been recovered earlier from Barabanki. Charges of murder, causing disappearance of evidence and common intention under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) have been to the case, while efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accused, Adil and Toufeeq, police said.
