Meerut, July 10 -- A day after a violent protest over the murder of a college student escalated into clashes with police outside the Meerut Collectorate, authorities registered a criminal case against around 60 protesters, arrested seven people, and launched a search for dozens of others accused of blocking roads, attacking police personnel and disrupting public order. The FIR, registered late Wednesday night at Civil Lines police station, names 13 individuals and includes 25 to 50 unidentified persons under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Criminal Law Amendment (CLA) Act. Police said the accused organised an unlawful assembly without permission, obstructed traffic, interfered with government work, assaulted police personnel and spread misleading information on social media. Eleven police personnel were injured during the confrontation and are undergoing treatment . The protest was staged over the murder of a woman student from the TP Nagar area in May. According to police, several organisers persuaded the victim's family to join the demonstration and mobilised supporters from neighbouring districts, without obtaining prior permission from the administration. The blockade lasted for nearly three hours. Two ambulances were also caught in the traffic jam before police managed to clear a passage. The FIR has been registered as Case Crime No. 173/2026 under Sections 74, 109(1), 126(2), 132, 223, 189, 190, 195, 196, 270, 121, 221 and 226 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Section 7 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act. By Wednesday night, police had arrested seven accused: Ankit Kumar of Hapur, Arvind Kumar and Ravi Kumar alias Gautam of Noida, Ritik of Meerut, Navneet Kumar of Moradabad, Himanshu Siddharth of Meerut and Lavi alias Shubham of Parikshitgarh. Raids are continuing to apprehend the remaining suspects. The protesters had demanded the arrest of Ankit, a PAC constable and brother of the main murder accused Ankush, along with their mother. The victim's family also sought the addition of rape charges in the murder case.
