LUCKNOW, July 24 -- Medical students across government medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh, including King George's Medical University (KGMU), on Thursday launched a coordinated protest demanding that internship stipends for MBBS and BDS students be revised and brought on par with those offered at premier institutions such as AIIMS and SGPGI. At KGMU, a group of students in a memorandum urged the state government to increase the stipend and ensure parity with national institutes. Similar representations were submitted by students at several other government medical colleges across the state. The students argued that despite performing the same clinical duties as interns at AIIMS and SGPGI, they receive significantly lower stipends in Uttar Pradesh's government medical colleges. They demanded an immediate revision in the stipend structure and implementation of a uniform policy. Following the submission of the memorandum, the students decided to suspend their agitation for two weeks, saying they did not want patient care or academic activities to be affected.
