Mayor calls spl session onwomen quota, opposition says 'formal agenda missing'
LUCKNOW, April 21 -- The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) faces a major political deadlock as mayor Sushma Kharkwal convenes a special House session on April 23 to address the controversial defeat of the women's reservation proposal.
While the mayor cites the meeting as a "moral necessity for political participation", opposition corporators from the Congress and Samajwadi Party have branded the move unconstitutional, citing a "missing formal agenda".
"The special House session is being held to address women's reservation," said Kharkwal.
Kharkwal triggered the confrontation by sending a letter to municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar, demanding the session without specifying a list of business.
She said the rights of half the population supersede administrative formalities, asserting that "the issue of women's reservation is too important to be delayed by procedural excuses."
The mayor plans to introduce a formal resolution of condemnation, aiming to send a strong signal about local representation in democracy. However, Congress corporator Mamta Chaudhary and SP corporator Yawar Hussain Reshu labelled the session "illegal," pointing to past assurances that no House meeting would occur without a pre-circulated agenda.htc...
