Manoranjan Chitrakar brings alive Kolkata's Kalighat Patachitra
India, July 1 -- Artist Manoranjan Chitrakar, who hails from a family of traditional scroll painters (patuas), has unveiled a collection of his artwork during the ongoing Kalighat Patachitra exhibition in the state capital.
This traditional art form of West Bengal is practised by families of artists originally from the Kalighat Temple area of Kolkata, who continue to preserve this rare craft across different parts of the state. The 53-year-old Manoranjan has showcased his works extensively across India and abroad.
The event was inaugurated by eminent writer and scholar of folk literature, Vidya Bindu Singh, and has been curated by painter and educationist Vandana Sehgal.
"Manoranjan Chitrakar is not only carrying forward the legacy of this traditional art form but is also imbuing it with contemporary thought and themes," says Sehgal.
The painter, who also conducted a workshop for budding artists, displayed around 50 of his works, including a massive 10-by-12-foot scroll painting based on an environmental theme.
"Earlier, this work was limited to our ancestors. Now, family members have spread out and are practising this art in different places. My son and daughter are now following this art form, and we hope the new generation will carry it forward," shares Chitrakar....
