Man shot dead near gym in Chandigarh Sec 9
Chandigarh, March 19 -- A 31-year-old property dealer was shot dead by two unidentified assailants outside a gym in Chandigarh's upscale Sector 9 market on Wednesday, police said, with gangster Lucky Patial claiming responsibility for the attack.
Police confirmed that Patial's gang is affiliated with the Davinder Bambiha gang, which, on Tuesday, had attacked a Lawrence Bishnoi-backed student leader, Jashanpreet Singh Jawanda, at Panjab University. As of now, Chandigarh police have ruled out any connection between the two incidents except that associates of the same gang carried out the shootings, but for different reasons.
Police have registered a case of murder at the Sector 11 police station and are on the lookout for the two assailants, officers said.
According to the police, around 12.15pm, the victim, Charanpreet Singh, a resident of Kubaheri Khard village in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, had left a gym on Madhya Marg and entered his SUV when two men on a scooter, who were waiting for him, opened fire at him.
"The attackers reportedly fired 12 rounds from both sides of the vehicle, and around six holes were also seen on the car's windshield.
After firing the bullets, the two accused fled, riding on the wrong side, and headed towards Landran. The number plate used on the motorcycle is also allegedly counterfeit. The victim was rushed to PGIMER for treatment, but died from blood loss before treatment could begin. His body is currently at the mortuary in PGIMER, and the post-mortem is yet to be performed," said a senior officer of Chandigarh Police, on the condition of anonymity.
Later in the day, Patial's gang allegedly claimed responsibility for the incident through a post shared on Instagram from an account allegedly affiliated with the gangster.
In the post, the Patial gang claimed that Singh was an informer for gangs working against them. They also claimed that he had a role in the murder of Gurvinder Singh in Mohali in January.
While Singh was a property dealer by profession, police claim he also had some association with gangsters, an angle which is currently being probed. He is allegedly named in five FIRs registered in parts of Punjab, for offences including voluntarily causing hurt. There are allegations of his being involved in the drug trade, which are being probed. He was also active on social media under the name 'Preet Nagra'.
The killing has sent shock waves across the city, as the crime scene is in an area housing the Chandigarh Police Headquarters and the UT Secretariat....
