LUCKNOW, July 15 -- A 30-year-old man from Lucknow's Mohanlalganj allegedly lost nearly Rs.4.5 lakh in a suspected SIM-swap cyber fraud after receiving a phone call during a visit to Haridwar, prompting police to register an FIR on Monday and launch an investigation on Tuesday According to the complaint, Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Kudha village in Mohanlalganj, was in Haridwar on June 3 when he received a call from an unknown person claiming that an OTP had been sent to his mobile number and warning that his SIM card would be deactivated if he did not share it. Sandeep refused to disclose the OTP. However, within a short time, his mobile SIM stopped working. He alleged that after SIM became inactive, fraudsters gained access to his two bank accounts maintained at the Union Bank of India branch in Mohanlalganj. Between June 5 and June 21, the accused allegedly withdrew around Rs.4.5 lakh through multiple transactions. Sandeep claimed that he did not receive any SMS alerts or OTPs from the bank during this period, preventing him from detecting the unauthorised withdrawals.
