Silchar, Sept. 8 -- A 30-year-old cab driver in Guwahati was arrested for allegedly beheading his wife over suspicion of an illicit affair, police said on Monday, adding that he kept her severed head in a refrigerator for five days until the body was recovered on Saturday night. The accused, identified as Ramanuj Goswami from Dhubri's Gauripur, surrendered at the Hatigaon Police Station after initially fleeing the scene. "He has confessed to the crime and said that it happened in a heated moment," said the Guwahati deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Tabu Ram Pegu, adding that a sharp machete was used in the murder and it has been recovered. "A blood-stained Dao (machete) has been recovered from the site and will be sent for forensic tests. We also recovered empty bottles of alcohol, and the accused said he was drunk when he killed his wife," Pegu added. According to police, the incident happened on the morning of September 3, and the accused later left the house leaving the severed body behind. The victim, Riya Talukdar, 25, originally from Guwahati's Noonmati. The couple married in October last year and were living in the house owned by the accused's father. Police said that during the search on Saturday, they recovered the victim's severed head, placed inside a black polythene bag, from the refrigerator. Some of her severed fingers were also found. "The neighbours said that a foul smell started coming from the locked house and on Sunday evening, they informed us about the entire scenario," said the officer-in-charge of Hatigaon Police Station, Amzad Brahma. "During the search, we found the head inside the fridge, packed in a black-coloured plastic," he said....
