VARANASI, Feb. 8 -- Fed up with the taunts by the mother of a boy, a man allegedly murdered his 10-year-old nephew and threw his body in the Saryu, in Ballia, six days ago, police said. To avoid suspicion, the killer himself surrounded the police station and demanded action in the matter, they added. The accused was identified as Ganesh Prajapati. His wife was also arrested for instigating the man to commit the murder. Dinesh Kumar Shukla, additional superintendent of police ( North), said that on the evening of January 31, the body of Abhishek alias Modi, a resident of Singhi village, was found in the Saryu. The post-mortem examination report confirmed that the death was due to a head injury. Based on a complaint filed by the deceased's uncle, Ganesh, the police registered a case and began an investigation. A joint team of SWAT, surveillance team, and Sahatwar police station investigated the matter and arrested the uncle, Ganesh Prajapati. The officer said that during rigorous questioning, he confessed that his Bhabhi (sister-in-law), Asha Devi, frequently taunted his wife for not having a son. The boy took Abhishek on his bicycle to a place near the liquor shop in Chandpur Old Basti. There, he stopped the boy and took Abhishek on his motorcycle to the banks of the Saryu. He hit Abhishek alias Modi on the head with a brick lying there. He fell to the ground after which Ganesh threw him into the river and returned home, he told the police. When the boy asked where Abhishek was, the uncle threatened him, saying that if he told anyone, he would kill him and his family. Shukla said that after committing the murder, Ganesh Prajapati returned home, and pretended to search for Abhishek, even filing a missing person complaint with the police. On January 31, the day after the body was found, he and his wife collected a crowd that surrounded the police station.
