VARANASI, June 22 -- Nearly a month after a 24-year-old woman went missing in Azamgarh, police have arrested a man accused of abducting and murdering her. The victim's skeletal remains were recovered from the Badaila Tal area under Jahanaganj police station limits on Saturday. According to police, the woman, identified as Mamta Rajbhar, had been missing since May 22. Her mother, Geeta Devi, a resident of Nai village under Mehnagar police station area, lodged a complaint on June 19 after repeated efforts to trace her daughter failed. In her complaint, she alleged that Mamta had been in contact with Manoj Yadav alias Murha, a resident of Jalalpur village under Jahanaganj police station area. Based on the complaint, police registered a case and began an investigation. Azamgarh senior superintendent of police Anil Kumar said evidence collected during the investigation pointed to the involvement of Manoj Yadav in the case. The investigation indicated that the woman had been abducted and later murdered, following which additional charges were added to the case. Police arrested the accused, Manoj Yadav, 25, on Saturday. During questioning, he allegedly confessed to the crime and told investigators where he had concealed the body. Acting on his information, police recovered the victim's skeletal remains from a bush-covered area near Badaila Tal. Officials said the body had decomposed into a skeleton due to the passage of time. The victim's clothes were also recovered from the spot. Police said the head was missing from the remains. Investigators said the accused admitted to taking the woman away, murdering her and hiding her body in the pond area. Further investigation is under way to establish all the circumstances surrounding the crime and gather additional evidence. Police said legal proceedings are continuing on the basis of the recovery and other evidence collected during the investigation.
