Man handed 20-yr jail term for raping minor
Rudrapur, Sept. 16 -- A special Pocso court in Champawat on Monday sentenced a 24-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a 15-year-old girl and imposed a fine of Rs.75,000 on him.
The convict was identified as Naresh Kashyap alias Chhotu.
Government counsel KS Rana said on Tuesday that Kashyap had not only raped the minor but had also married her.
"The convicted man not only raped the minor but also got married to her at a temple. The court awarded him 20 years' imprisonment and imposed a fine on Monday," Rana said.
The case came to light after the minor's grandmother approached police in Tanakpur on March 3, 2025, alleging that her 15-year-old granddaughter was missing after going to the market around noon on March 1. She had alleged that Kashyap, a resident of Ambedkar Nagar, had kidnapped the girl as he was allegedly constantly harassing her with marriage proposals.
