GORAKHPUR, Sept. 22 -- An unidentified man was found dead in an open drain near Madrasa Chauraha under the jurisdiction of Rajghat police station on Sunday evening, marking the second death linked to an uncovered drain in Gorakhpur within 24 hours. Earlier, an 18-month-old girl had fallen into a drain in the Gorakhnath area through a wide gap between two slabs and died. The man, believed to be around 40 years old, died after falling into the deep, open drain. The incident occurred around 11am when he was reportedly walking near the crossing. CCTV footage showed him stopping near a parked scooter and holding on to it for support. A short while later, he appeared to become dizzy and fell into the drain, according to the report. CO Kotwali Omkar Dutt Tiwari said the body has been kept in the mortuary of Sadar Hospital and efforts are underway to establish the deceased's identity. Police are questioning people in the area, while photographs of the deceased have been circulated to nearby districts to help identify him. Locals said people reportedly passed the spot without noticing the man. Later, a child riding a bicycle spotted him lying in the drain, following which local residents pulled him out and informed the police. However, he had already died. The two deaths within 24 hours have once again raised concerns over uncovered drains in the city. Despite repeated incidents, several drains remain open or have gaps between their slabs. Following the recent accidents, municipal commissioner Ajay Jain had directed officials to cover all open drains and fill gaps between slabs. However, construction and covering work remains incomplete at several locations. Open drains or gaps between slabs have reportedly been found at various places, including Civil Lines, near DAV Degree College in Chauraha Gola, Asuran Road, near Khajanchi bypass and Bharwalia. The drain involved in the recent incident has reportedly been covered, but uncovered drains at other locations across the city continue to pose a safety risk....
