Kanpur, Oct. 31 -- In a case of hate crime, a 24-year-old man was allegedly tied up and beaten to death by the family of his 18-year-old cousin with whom he was purportedly in a relationship, when he went to meet her at Parchh village in the Maudaha area of Hamirpur district on Wednesday afternoon, police said on Thursday. Following the news of death of the man, identified as Ravi Shriwas, the cousin allegedly attempted suicide by slitting her throat and is currently in a serious condition. Ravi was a resident of Jaspura in Banda district. Ravi's father Uma Shankar alias Kali Deen has lodged an FIR against five individuals in connection with the murder. Superintendent of police, Hamirpur Deeksha Sharma, confirmed the registration of the FIR and said that three people have been detained and a police contingent has been deployed in the village to maintain order. She added that Ravi was murdered inside the house. The young woman's uncle Pintoo attacked and injured Ravi with a knife soon after his arrival at Parchh village, eyewitnesses said. Following the stabbing, Pintoo, along with other family members, reportedly tied Ravi with a rope and assaulted him with sticks. The assailants took the seriously injured Ravi to the local government hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. In an attempt to mislead the authorities, the group initially claimed that Ravi had consumed celphos tablets, even presenting an empty container of the poison. However, the nature of his injuries alerted doctors who informed the police. The police arrived in Parchh village shortly after the murder. Upon learning of Ravi's death, his cousin used a sharp object to cut her throat. The police assisted in rushing the grievously injured woman to the government hospital at Maudaha in an auto-rickshaw. Her condition remains critical. Pintoo also sustained injuries in the initial brawl and was referred to the Hamirpur district hospital from the community health centre after receiving preliminary treatment. The police said Ravi was in love with the young woman but the fact that they were cousins was the main impediment to their marriage. Ravi's family had moved from Parchh village to Jaspura, Banda, 20 years ago, according to the police. Earlier this year, Ravi had reportedly taken the woman away just four days before her wedding with another man was scheduled on June 2. She was rescued 15 days later. The woman's family had recently fixed her marriage again, this time in Kadaura, Jalaun district, on November 2. Ravi visited the village in an attempt to take her away again and the move was opposed by her family members, people familiar with the matter said. The woman's grandmother Kalli alleged that Ravi was trying to abduct her granddaughter on Wednesday and had first attacked her son Pintoo with a knife....
