LUCKNOW, July 20 -- A 35-year-old man was allegedly beaten with sticks and iron rods by a group of 8-10 men after he reportedly refused to pay an extortion demand in Lucknow's Indira Nagar area, police said on Sunday. A video of the assault, which surfaced on social media, prompted police action. The victim alleged that the attackers fled after leaving him unconscious, believing he was dead. According to the complaint lodged at Indira Nagar police station, Akhilesh Kumar, a resident of Mohammadpur Majra, was returning home from Bajrang Chauraha at around 10.45 pm on Friday when he was allegedly intercepted by a group of 8-10 men. Four of the accused were identified as Chetram, Ritik Rawat, Suraj Rawat and Karan Rawat. The complainant alleged that the accused assaulted him with sticks and iron rods, leaving him critically injured. He further claimed that after he lost consciousness, the attackers fled the scene, believing he was dead. After regaining consciousness, Kumar called the police helpline (112) and was taken to Civil Hospital. In his complaint, he alleged that Chetram had been demanding Rs.10,000 a month as extortion and had threatened to kill him if he failed to pay. He said he had not approached the police earlier out of fear. "Based on the complaint received at Indira Nagar Police Station, a case has been registered. One accused has been taken into custody and is being interrogated," he said....
