VARANASI, July 7 -- A 42-year-old man was arrested following a police encounter on Monday for allegedly murdering his girlfriend, dismembering her body into three parts, and disposing of the remains at different locations in Jaunpur district. During the exchange, the accused sustained a bullet injury to his leg. He was subsequently taken to a hospital, where he received medical treatment, a police officer said. According to police, the accused allegedly committed the crime following an altercation over a WhatsApp chat. He reportedly dumped the victim's torso in bushes near the Ranipur Bypass under the jurisdiction of the Madiyahoo police station, where it was recovered on Sunday. Police said further investigation into the case is underway. The accused has been identified as Hemal Khakhariya, alias Dilip, a native of Bhavnagar in Gujarat. He had been residing in Teachers Colony in Madiyahoo, Jaunpur. The officer said that during interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed that on July 4, he had brought Reshma Khan, alias Sana, from Babatpur to his rented accommodation. According to police, an argument broke out between the two over mobile phone chats, as the woman allegedly wanted to check whom he had been communicating with. The accused allegedly told investigators that, in a fit of rage, he slit her throat with a knife while she was asleep. Police said the accused allegedly bought black polythene bags and used a cleaver to dismember the body into three parts. He allegedly dumped the torso near the Ranipur Bypass and disposed of the legs and other body parts near the Ramnagar Block turn. According to police, he was on his way to dispose of the remaining remains when he learned that the body had been discovered and police had begun efforts to identify it. Police said they received a tip-off that the accused was near the Ramnagar Block gate attempting to flee. When officers reached the spot, he allegedly opened fire at the police team. In retaliatory firing, the accused sustained a bullet injury to his right leg and was arrested, police added. A .32-bore pistol, cartridges, the knife and cleaver allegedly used in the crime, the deceased's severed leg, a mobile phone, and a motorcycle were recovered from the accused, Circle Officer Vijay Chaudhary said. Police have registered a case against him under various charges, including murder, destruction of evidence, attempted murder of police personnel, and illegal possession of arms.
