Kanpur, June 6 -- An 85-year-old man bludgeoned his 36-year-old son to death on Thursday evening after the younger man began beating his 80-year-old mother in a drunken rage at their home in Anandpura Badera village. Police have taken the man, Nanhebhai, into custody. The son, Bhagwat, died on the way to hospital in Jaitpur. "We received information that a father had killed his son in Anandpura Badera," said Dharmendra Kumar, the station house officer at Ajnar police station. "The deceased was a heavy drinker and frequently fought with and assaulted his parents." According to the SHO, the body has been sent for post-mortem examination after a panchnama was completed. "A thorough investigation is underway and legal action will be taken," he said. Bhagwat's mother, Rambhi, told police that her son married a woman named Premvati about 10 years ago but drove her away within months due to relentless abuse fuelled by alcohol. "My daughter-in-law came back only three or four times. Then she left for her parents' house for good," she said. Even after his wife left, Bhagwat continued to spend all his earnings from manual labour on liquor. On Thursday night Bhagwat returned home heavily drunk. When his mother objected, he knocked her to the ground and began beating her. His father tried to intervene but could not stop him. Nanhebhai then picked up a heavy stick and struck Bhagwat on the head. When his son fell to the ground, still moving, he picked up a large stone and brought it down on his head, according to witness accounts police have recorded. Neighbours rushed the bleeding man to the health centre, where doctors declared him dead. Nanhebhai was later seen sitting outside the hospital in a visibly distraught state.
