Male leopard captured in Dudhwa buffer zone, 21 days after fatal attack
Lakhimpur Kheri, June 29 -- Twenty-one days after the tragic death of seven-year-old Shubham Yadav in Kanhaiyadin Purwa village, located under the Isanagar police station limits, forest officials in the Dudhwa buffer zone captured the leopard responsible early Sunday morning.
Kirti Chaudhary, deputy director of the Dudhwa buffer zone, confirmed that the captured animal is a fully grown adult male, estimated to be about seven years old.
Following the fatal attack on June 7, which occurred while the boy was accompanying his father in their fields in Laljipurwa, several forest teams were deployed under the supervision of sub-divisional officer (SDO) Manoj Tiwari to track and trap the animal.
Chaudhary stated that teams tracked the leopard's movements along the Beltua nullah, near Kanhaiyadin Purwa and Laljipurwa, and set up cages on either side of the waterway. On Sunday morning, the leopard was lured into a cage near Kanhaiyadin Purwa and trapped. The animal has since been moved to the Dhaurahra forest range headquarters for a medical examination. Further decisions regarding its release will be made based on the medical report and instructions from higher authorities.
SDO Manoj Tiwari confirmed that the captured leopard matches the one responsible for the June 7 attack. "Pugmark analysis and images from camera traps matched the leopard captured today," Tiwari said.
Meanwhile, wildlife experts noted that holding a large wild animal, such as a leopard or tiger, in a cage for an extended period, especially during the scorching summer, can be challenging for handlers. They noted that while big cats often quench their thirst by licking water from surfaces, this behaviour is restricted within a cage environment.
