Kolkata, April 4 -- A leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) was arrested from Bagdogra airport in Darjeeling on Friday morning on the suspicion of being one of the main conspirators behind the April 1 mob violence in Malda district over the special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral roll, additional director general (ADG) north Bengal K Jayaraman said. The man was identified as Mofakkerul Islam, a resident of Itahar in north North Dinajpur district. A second man, identified as Akramul Bagani, was also arrested for allegedly uploading inciting videos on YouTube. Police found social media videos showing Islam standing on the roof a car and making an instigating speech at Mothabari in Malda on Wednesday when a mob detained eight judicial officers involved in the SIR process for more than eight hours and attacked their vehicles as they were leaving late at night. "Mofakkerul Islam is a resident of Itahar and registered as a voter in the Raiganj assembly constituency (in North Dinajpur). He is an AIMIM leader and apparently a lawyer as well. The criminal investigation departmennt (CID) was tracking him and some other suspects after the Mothabari incident. The CID detained him at Bagdogra airport and informed us. He was trying to fly to Bengaluru," Jayaraman told the media at Mothabari police station. "With this the number of arrests has gone up to 35.
