Dehradun, Feb. 9 -- A mass protest gathering for the demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the sexual assault and murder of a 19-year-old hotel receptionist in 2022 was held on Dehradun's Parade Ground on Sunday, with a set of five resolutions passed unanimously at the event. The gathering included representatives of political parties, social organisations and civil society groups. They demanded a CBI probe monitored by a Supreme Court judge, and emphasised that the woman's parents be regarded as the case's central complainants. Participants raised slogans for justice and accountability, and called for full disclosure of the alleged involvement of a "VIP" associated with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the case. According to organisers, the first resolution passed at the event demanded the cancellation of the FIR filed by Dr Anil Prakash Joshi, while the second called for a CBI investigation conducted under the supervision of a Supreme Court judge, based on the letter written to the chief minister by the woman's parents. The third resolution demanded that chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami be brought under investigation and removed from office until the completion of a fair probe. The fourth resolution sought the initiation of an investigation within 15 days on the basis of the complaint submitted by the victim's family. The fifth resolution demanded the removal of two VIPs from their positions and that they be brought under investigation for their alleged roles in the matter. Addressing the gathering, the victim's father rejected allegations of any compromise and reiterated his demand for a high-level probe. "I had to come here because many people think that I had compromised when I met the chief minister on January 8. I am not a person who will ever agree to any compromise on this issue. What will the soul of my daughter feel? How can I accept any compromise when my daughter herself did not bow before a VIP," he said. Activist Kamla Pant, convenor of the event, said the agitation would continue until justice is delivered. Former chief minister and senior Congress leader Harish Rawat said the movement was not political but about justice and dignity. "This is the fight for a daughter of Uttarakhand and for the pride of Uttarakhand. Everyone wants justice for the Pauri receptionist girl," he said, Reacting to the event, BJP state president and Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt accused the opposition of using the issue for electoral gains ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. "The investigation was initiated in accordance with the wishes of the victim's family and public sentiment, and not for political reasons. The opposition is trying to exploit the issue for electoral gains," Bhatt said....
