Mahana bats for uniform rules across all assemblies
LUCKNOW, May 13 -- Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana on Tuesday called for uniformity in the functioning and rules of procedure of legislative assemblies across the country, saying common rules would help make parliamentary work more effective, transparent and people-centric.
A three-day meeting of the high-level committee of presiding officers began in Mysuru, Karnataka, on Tuesday to discuss ways to make democratic traditions and legislative functioning more effective, modern and uniform, according to a press statement.
The committee includes speakers of legislative assemblies from six states. Satish Mahana, UP legislative assembly speaker, has been appointed chairman of the panel.
Addressing the meeting, Mahana said a shared framework was needed to deal with challenges faced by legislative assemblies. "There should be no unnecessary disparities in the rules of procedure of any legislative assembly, and uniform processes and rules should be developed for all legislatures," Mahana said.
He also raised concerns over possible misuse of Artificial Intelligence and said technology should be used to strengthen democratic institutions.
Mahana said legislative assemblies should build stronger engagement with the public so citizens can better understand how these institutions function....
