Varanasi, Aug. 12 -- A mother and her son took their own lives, allegedly following the death of the head of their family, at a guest house under Luxa police station area here on Monday, police said on Tuesday.. The victims, a 51-year-old mother and her 27-year-old son, both residents of Panvel in Maharashtra's Raigarh district. They had arrived in Varanasi four days ago with a 53-year-old man. The family had been staying at a guest house in the Luxa police station area since August 7. According to police, the man's health deteriorated suddenly around midnight on August 9. He was rushed to the BHU Trauma Center, where he subsequently died. Following his last rites, the mother and son returned to their guest house on Monday. The tragedy came to light when guest house staff, concerned by a lack of response, alerted the Luxa police. Upon breaking open the locked door, officers found the mother and son unconscious. They were rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared them dead. Preliminary investigations suggest that both individuals consumed a poisonous substance. Assistant commissioner of police (Dashashwamedh) Atul Anjan Tripathi stated that the pair appeared to have been deeply distraught by the recent loss of their family member. Police investigations further revealed that the head of the family had been struggling with unpaid business loans, a factor that may have contributed to the family's distress.
