Lucknow gets first ABC training centre
LUCKNOW, Oct. 29 -- The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has opened a dedicated training centre for animal birth control (ABC), seeking to strengthen the implementation of dog sterilisation and anti-rabies vaccination programmes through trained personnel. The civic body says it has sterilised 1.08 lakh dogs since September 2019, covering around 80% of the city's dog population, according to a January 2026 survey.
Urban development minister AK Sharma inaugurated the facility in Jarhara, Indira Nagar, on Wednesday, with mayor Sushma Kharkwal presiding over the programme. The LMC described it as the country's first ABC training centre.
The initiative aims to address human-dog conflicts by improving the technical skills of veterinarians, para-veterinarians and animal handlers, while standardising sterilisation and animal-care procedures.
The centre can train 30 participants at a time through a 15-day programme that combines classroom instruction with practical sessions. Its infrastructure includes an operation theatre with two operating tables, a preparation room, a conference room and two classrooms. htc...
